The Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II is the U.S. Marine Corps' variant of the Joint Strike Fighter, featuring revolutionary Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) capability powered by a unique lift fan system. Entering operational service in 2015, the F-35B combines stealth technology, advanced sensors, and network-centric warfare capabilities to provide the Marines with unprecedented combat effectiveness. The aircraft's Pratt & Whitney F135 engine and Rolls-Royce LiftSystem enable it to operate from amphibious assault ships, forward operating bases, and austere locations where conventional fighters cannot. The F-35B features advanced stealth characteristics, sensor fusion that integrates data from multiple sources into a single tactical picture, and the ability to carry precision weapons internally to maintain its low radar signature. VMFA-242 "Bats," based at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, was one of the first operational Marine squadrons to receive the F-35B, demonstrating the aircraft's capability to project power in the Pacific theater.
