The T49 steel bar-cleat track was developed to provide excellent traction in difficult terrain, while the addition of Extended End Connectorscommonly known as duckbillshelped spread the tanks weight over a wider footprint, improving flotation in mud, snow, and soft ground. These field and factory-installed modifications became increasingly common on Vertical Volute Spring Suspension (VVSS) Shermans during the latter stages of World War II, particularly during operations in Northwest Europe.
