The M36 Jackson was one of the most powerful U.S. tank destroyers to see service during World War II, created by combining the reliable M4 Sherman chassis with the high-velocity 90mm M3 gun. Developed to counter heavily armored German vehicles such as the Panther and Tiger, the M36 provided American forces with a long-range anti-tank capability that had been lacking in earlier tank destroyer designs. Entering combat in late 1944, it remained in service after the war and was widely used by Allied nations during the early Cold War period.
