The Churchill Mk.IV AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) was one of the most specialized variants of Britains rugged Churchill infantry tank, developed to support engineering operations during major Allied assaults. Equipped with the powerful 290mm Petard spigot mortar, the AVRE was designed to destroy obstacles, bunkers, and fortified positions, playing a critical role during the D-Day landings and subsequent campaigns in Northwest Europe. Built on the Churchills excellent mobility and heavy armor protection, these vehicles became an essential part of the famous Funnies operated by the 79th Armoured Division.
