The AFV Club AF35274 1/35 Churchill Mk.III Type D Carpet Layer Model Tank Kit depicts one of the rarest and most innovative engineering variants of the famous British Churchill infantry tank. Equipped with the distinctive Type D Carpet Layer system, this specialized vehicle was designed to deploy reinforced trackways over soft ground, sand, and other difficult terrain, enabling Allied armored vehicles to maintain momentum during amphibious assaults and battlefield advances.

The Carpet Layer was one of the many specialized vehicles developed under the British Armys famous Hobarts Funnies program. Operated by the 79th Armoured Division during World War II, these purpose-built engineering vehicles played a crucial role in overcoming obstacles encountered during the Normandy campaign and subsequent operations in Northwest Europe. By laying a temporary roadway ahead of advancing forces, the Churchill Carpet Layer helped prevent vehicles from becoming bogged down in terrain that could otherwise halt an offensive.
