The U.S. M5 3-inch Gun on M1 Carriage represents an important late-World War II American anti-tank weapon developed to counter increasingly well-armored German vehicles. Combining the proven 3-inch gun derived from the M10 tank destroyer program with a modified field carriage, the M5 provided U.S. anti-tank units with a powerful weapon capable of engaging enemy armor at extended ranges. Though introduced relatively late in the war, it served with dedicated tank destroyer units and remained an interesting example of American efforts to increase anti-armor capability.
