Formed in China during World War II, the CACW combined American pilots, aircraft, and support personnel with Chinese aviators to defend Chinese airspace and conduct combat operations against Japanese forces. Operating under the command of Major General Claire Lee Chennault, the 14th Air Force became famous for its aggressive missions in the China-Burma-India Theater, carrying on the legacy of the earlier Flying Tigers. The P-40N proved to be a rugged and dependable fighter, valued for its durability, heavy armament, and effectiveness in low-level combat roles despite being outclassed by newer enemy fighters at higher altitudes.
