The IJN Akagi (meaning Red Castle) was one of the Imperial Japanese Navys most famous aircraft carriers originally built as a battlecruiser, then converted into a carrier under the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty. She became a flagship of the Kido Butai (First Air Fleet) and played a central role in early Pacific War victories before being sunk at Midway.
