Commissioned in September 1945, USS Midway (CV-41) represented a dramatic leap forward in American carrier design. As the lead ship of her class, she was the largest aircraft carrier in the world at the time of completion and the first too wide to transit the original Panama Canal locks. Built with an armored flight deck and formidable air group capacity, she bridged the gap between the Essex-class carriers of World War II and the supercarriers that defined the Cold War. Over a remarkable 47-year career, she served from the early jet age through Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm, continually modernized to meet evolving naval aviation demands.
