The battleship Richelieu stood as the most powerful capital ship ever completed for the French Navy, a product of interwar naval rivalry and innovative design. Laid down in 1935, she featured an all-forward main battery arrangement of eight 380mm guns in two quadruple turretsan arrangement intended to maximize armor protection and concentrate firepower. After escaping to Dakar in 1940 to avoid capture following the fall of France, she later joined the Allied cause and underwent extensive refit in the United States. By 1946, she represented a modernized and fully operational flagship, reflecting both French resilience and postwar renewal.
